Recap:
Albany took the lead in the top of the first inning when Matthew Mino hit a ground-rule double over the right fielder
with one out, then stole third and scored on a passed ball.

Albany scored its second run with two outs in the top of the 4th inning when Nick Kubler legged out an infield single,
and Arlo Rudy took the next pitch down the right field line for a run-scoring triple. In the bottom of the inning,
Saratoga got the first three hitters on, but Rudy struck out the next three Saratoga batters. He allowed one run on six hits
with five strike-outs and one walk in five innings.

Ben Kleven came on to pitch the sixth, and with a runner on first and no outs got a double play when Rudy caught a
line drive at second and threw to Alex Oyle at first to double off the runner. The next batter hit a ground ball that
Alex Rowland ranged to his left to secure, and the Albany third baseman fired to first for the final out.

Ryan Masterson pitched a two-hit shutout and scored the game's first run in the fifth inning to lead Albany past
one of its archrivals.

Masterson gave up a pair of singles with two outs in the bottom of the second inning
but struck out the next batter looking to get out of the jam. He retired the last 11 North Oakland batters
and finished with eight strikeouts -- including five in a row in the fourth and fifth
innings.

Albany broke open a scoreless game by batting around in the fifth and sixth innings. Masterson led
off the three-run fifth inning with a single to right center, moved to second base on Colin
Armstrong's sacrifice bunt and scored on Patrick Xu's double that eluded the diving North Oakland center fielder.

After Jesse Santos was hit by a pitch and Paul Kennedy was safe on a error by the shortstop to load
the bases, Zachary Chiang walked to score the second run, and Kyle Harty Strang singled to drive in the
third run of the inning.

Albany broke the game open with five runs in the sixth inning. Santos hit a bloop to left center to score the first run.
Nathan Gill
drove in the second run with a line drive to left field for his second hit of the game. Two more runs came in on
Marcellus Love
's single to center field, and Garrett Freeberg closed out the scoring with
an RBI single to left field.

Clayton Valley   1 0 0 - 0 2 0 - 0 ... 3   4 2
Albany ..........     0 0 0 - 2 0 7 - x ... 9 12 2
Albany rallied for seven runs in the bottom of the sixth to move into the final of the winner's bracket on Monday at Memorial Park.
Marquess Valdez
singled with one out, took second base on a wild pitch and was safe on a close play at third when winning pitcher Nathan Gill
hit a ball off the leg of the pitcher. Marcellus Love singled home Valdez with the tying run, and Patrick Xu's RBI single scored Gill
with the go-ahead run. Love scored when Nick Lamb executed a perfect suicide squeeze and was safe when the ball was thrown
away at first base. Jesse Santos broke the game open with a two-run double down the left-field line. Albany closed out the scoring
on RBI singles by Kyle Harty Strang and Griffin Goetz.

Gill allowed only one run in six innings on the mound. He left with Albany leading, 2-1, and returned in the top of the fifth inning
with the scored tied, 2-2, and the bases loaded and no outs. He got the first batter out on a sacrifice fly to
Paul Kennedy in right center, induced the second batter to hit a grounder to Harty Strang for a force out at home
and got out of the inning on soft line drive to Santos at shortstop.

Albany had taken a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the fourth when Harty Strang walked, Kennedy was safe at second on
an error, and Garrett Freeberg drove both runners home with a single to left field.

Freeberg had made a key play in the top of the inning. With Clayton Valley leading, 1-0, Freeberg nailed a runner
at home after backing up on an overthrow at third base.

July 7 -- Albany 5 South Oakland 2
South Oakland   0 0 0 - 0 0 2 - 0 ... 2 6 7
Albany ..........      2 0 2 - 0 0 1 - x ...  5 3 2
Ryan Masterson won his second game of the tournament, limiting South Oakland to two unearned runs in
six innings on the mound. He struck out seven batters before giving way to reliever Jesse Santos, who struck out
three batters in the seventh inning after walking the first batter and earned the save.

Albany took advantage of some poor South Oakland fielding to jump out to a 4-0 lead after
three innings. In the first inning, Santos walked with one out, was safe at second when the South Oakland second baseman
was ruled to have obstructed Santos on his way to second base on Kyle Harty Strang's infield grounder.
Santos scored on Nathan Gill's single to right field, and Harty Strang came home when the South Oakland catcher's
toss back to the pitcher was thrown away. In the third inning, Patrick Xu walked, and Santos was safe
when the South Oakland left fielder dropped his line drive. Both Albany runners came home when
the South Oakland shortstop drew away the ball on Gill's ground ball.

South Oakland scored two runs in the top of the sixth inning, but Santos got Albany out of the inning
without further damage when his throw from center field nailed the South Oakland runner trying to
score from second base for the third out of the inning.

Albany's fifth run came in the bottom of the sixth inning when pinchrunner Garrett Freeberg
was safe at home on a wild pitch.

July 9 -- Albany 9 South Oakland 5
Albany ..........        0 7 0 - 1 0 0 - 1 ...  9 16 1
South Oakland    0 0 2 - 0 0 1 - 2 ...  5  8 5
Albany completed a four-game sweep of the District 4 Tournament with a 9-5 win over defending champion South Oakland.

Albany chased the SOLL starting pitcher, sending 13 batters to the plate and scoring seven runs in the second inning. Nathan Gill,
Tom Miller
and Garrett Freeberg loaded the bases, and Paul Kennedy drove in the first run with a sacrifice fly to deep left field.
Griffin Goetz
singled to load the bases, and Zach Chiang drove in a run on a forceout. With two out, Patrick Xu
singled to drive in a run, Jesse Santos drove in two runs with a single to left field, and Gill's 2-run RBI double closed out the scoring.

Pitchers Miller, Xu and Gill worked in and out of trouble all evening. Miller, the winning pitcher, got out of based-loaded jams
in the first and third innings, and Xu, who relieved Miller in the fourth, had the bases loaded in his first inning of work and
retired the side on an infield grounder. Gill came on to close the game and retired the last three batters after South Oakland
had pulled to within 9-5 with a runner on second base and no outs.

Albany had many chances to break open the game but only added two runs. The eighth Albany run scored on an overthrow
by the South Oakland catcher to third base in the fourth inning, and Xu drove in the ninth run in the top of the seventh inning
with his fourth hit of the game.

July 11 -- Albany 11 Benicia 1
Benicia 0 0 1 - 0 0  ...  1   2  1
Albany 0 0 5 - 6 x  ... 11 12  0
Ryan Masterson won his third game of all-star play, firing a two-hitter in four innings of work in the Section 1 opener.
Tom Miller retired the side in order to close out the game shortened by the mercy rule.

Albany took the lead with five runs in the bottom of the third. Jesse Santos was safe on an error, and Kyle Harty-Strang and
Nathan Gill singled to load the bases. Albany went ahead on walks to Garrett Freeberg and Paul Kennedy.
Zachary Chiang
singled in two runners, and Kennedy scored on a wild pitch to complete the scoring.

In the fourth, Albany again sent 10 batters to the plate. After Harty Strang walked, and Gill singled for his third hit of the game,
Freeberg drove in Harty Strang with a single. Marcellus Love singled to load the bases, and Albany broke the game open
when Chiang singled to score one run, and Patrick Xu and Santos had 2-run RBI.

July 13 -- Albany 11 Vacaville Central 1
Albany ................  0 2 5 - 1 3  ...  11 11  0
Vacaville Central  1 0 0 - 0 0  ...   1   4  3
Albany improved to 6-0 in all-star play and moved into the semifinals of the Section 1 Tournament with its second blowout win
in two days. Zachary Chiang and Patrick Xu combined to throw a four-hitter. Albany got out of trouble in the first
inning when catcher Marcellus Love threw out a runner trying to take third base on a strikeout, and Chiang picked
off a runner at second base. Chiang got out of trouble in the second inning by striking out three batters. He
finished with six strikeouts in three innings. Xu needed only 13 pitches to hurl two scoreless innings.
All outs were recorded on groundballs, including a 6-4-3 double play.

Albany took the lead in the second inning when Paul Kennedy doubled to right center and scored when Chiang was safe
on an error by the third baseman. Chiang scored on Xu's sacrifice fly to left field.

Albany broke the game open with five runs in the third inning. Love drove in Nathan Gill with a single, and
Kennedy again doubled to drive in Garrett Freeberg and Love. After Chiang and Nick Lamb
singled, Jesse Santos drove home two more runners with a single to make the score 7-1.

Kennedy extended Albany's lead to 8-1 with a 320-foot home run over the fence in left center in the fourth inning,
and Gill cleared the bases in the fifth with a double, scoring Tom Miller, Santos and Kyle Harty Strang.

July 15 -- Albany 2 Healdsburg 1
Healdsburg
0 0 0 - 1 0 0  - 0 ... 1 6 1
Albany ......
0 0 0 - 1 1 0 - x ... 2 3 2
Albany moved into the Section 1 championship game with a nail-biting victory over Healdsburg. It got RBI singles from
Paul Kennedy and Kyle Harty Strang to rally from a 1-0 deficit. But as it has been throughout Albany's 7-0 run in
all-star play, its defense was the difference.

Albany got out of a jam in the third inning when starting pitcher Nathan Gill put down the tag on catcher Marcellus Love's throw
to get the third out on a Healdsburg runner trying to score on a wild pitch. Shortstop Jesse Santos recorded 6-4 and 6-3 double plays
to erase threats in the fourth and fifth innings. In the sixth inning, Kennedy, the center fielder, chased down a ball hit to deep right center.

Gill pitched the first four innings before being relieved by Patrick Xu in the fifth inning. With one out in the seventh
inning, Santos came on with runners on first and second. After the first batter hit a bloop single to center field to load the
bases, Santos got the second out when Love made a sprawling catch on a foul ball behind the plate. After
falling behind 2-0 and then 3-1 in the count, Santos induced Healdsburg's cleanup batter to ground out to Gill at third base
on a 3-2 pitch and end the game.

Albany was limited to three singles. Santos led off the fourth inning with a walk and scored from third on Kennedy's
two-out single. In the fifth inning, Xu blooped a two-strike curve ball down the left-field line for a single and raced to
third when Santos grounded out to second base on a hit-and-run play. With two outs, Harty Strang beat out a grounder
deep into the hole at shortstop for the go-ahead run.

July 17 -- Albany 0 Benicia 6
Benicia 0 1 0 - 0 3 2 - 0  ...  6  5  0
Albany 0 0 0 - 0 0 0 - 0  ...  0  6  7
Albany's run in the Junior League All-Stars Tournament ended one game shy of the state championship
when it fell to Benicia in a rematch of their opening game won by Albany, 11-1.

Albany's fielding, the cornerstone of its success throughout its seven-game run, deserted it in the Section 1 championship.
All six Benicia runs were unearned. Albany outhit Benicia, 6-5, and had several other well-hit balls
caught by Benicia fielders.

The 14-year-old age group finished its Albany career having won the district or finished second every year (champions as 11s
and 14s and second as 10s and 12s). The team included seven 13-year-old players who are eligible to return in 2009.

July 7 -- Albany 11 South Oakland 4
Albany opened up a tightly contested game in the sixth inning by exploding for seven runs on eight hits. The game
went into the sixth inning tied at 4-4 thanks to a 2-run blast off of the bat of Arlo Rudy in the top of the fifth.
Alex Rowland, Jack Johnson and Kye Moffat combined to go 8-for-12 with four RBI and five runs scored.

July 9 -- Albany 4 Alameda #2 5
July 10 -- Albany 6 Clayton Valley #1 1
July 11 -- Albany 15 Alameda #2 0
July 12 -- Albany 5 Alameda #2 0
After dropping to the loser's bracket by suffering a 5-4 loss at the hands of Alameda, Albany secured
its second consecutive district championship by winning its next three contests by a combined 26-1 score.

In the first game, Alex Rowland, Ben Kleven and Matthew Mino took the mound and limited Clayton Valley to
one unearned run on two hits. Emmett Smay delivered the big hit, driving in two runs in the first inning to make the score 4-0.

Albany won the first game of the championship series, 15-0, behind stellar pitching from Arlo Rudy, who allowed only
three hits with eight strikeouts and two walks. Alex Oyle drove a ball to the fence in right center field during a
nine-run explosion in the ninth.

In the game that determined the district champion, Albany kept Alameda scoreless for the second consecutive day
behind great defense and dominant pitching performances from Daniel Dempster and Kleven. With Albany up 2-0
in the first and Alameda threatening to shorten the lead, Rowland caught a line drive to third and quickly flipped a
strike to pick off the runner at second. Another Albany double play stopped an Alameda threat in the bottom of the fourth
when Rudy fielded a grounder at second, stepped on the bag, and threw to first to end the inning. In the fifth inning,
with the score still close at 2-0, Rowland cut a runner down at home to preserve the shutout. Albany then got some
breathing room in the sixth by scoring three times. Mino scored his second run of the game on a Kye Moffat base hit to left,
then Smay brought home Collin Calloway and Moffat with a double. Dempster went 4 and 2/3 innings before giving way
to Kleven, who retired all four batters that he faced.

July 20 -- Albany 13 Benicia 10
Benicia 2 0 2 - 4 2 0 ... 10   9 0
Albany  1 3 1 - 0 8 x ... 13 12 2

Albany's 10s-11s became the youngest Albany team to ever win a sectional title when they rallied for eight runs --
six with two outs -- in the bottom of the fifth inning to defeat Benicia, 13-10, in the Section 1 championship game and
move on to Division II (state championship) tournament, beginning next weekend in Fremont.

Benicia had pulled ahead, 10-5, going into the bottom of the fifth inning when Collin Calloway hit a two-run home run
to pull Albany to within 10-7. With two outs, Matthew Mino doubled and Alex Rowland and Jack Johnson walked. In
the game's key play, Mino scored on a close play at home on a wild pitch on Johnson's walk to make the score 10-8.
Kai Moffat hit the first of four straight doubles to make the score 10-9. Emmett Smay drove in the tying and go-ahead
runs with a double to right center, and Alex Oyle and Calloway added RBI doubles.

Ben Kleven, who got the victory in relief, got out of a jam in the top of sixth thanks in part to a tremendous play by
Rowland on a ground ball at third base.

July 27 -- Albany 13 Danville 9
Albany outlasted Danville in the first game of the Northern California state championship tournament. Arlo Rudy and
Matthew Mino
each went 2-4. Rudy scored three runs and drove in two, while Mino scored two runs and drove in three.
Jack Johnson
had the big hit of the game when he belted a 2 -run blast well over the centerfield wall in the fourth inning.
Albany's defense continued to impress with a second inning 4-6-3 double play. It cut down a runner at second
and then at home in the fourth inning. Albany pitchers Rudy, Alex Rowland, Ben Kleven and Daniel Dempster
struck out nine Danville batters.

Aug. 2 -- Albany 2 Saratoga 1

The next batter hit a ground ball that
Alex Rowland ranged to his left to secure, and the Albany third baseman fired to first for the final out.

three consecutive batters – Love, Liam Knowles and Henry Rosenfeld – safely reaching first base to score one

Katz-Balmes
then hit a sharp grounder to shortstop which was bobbled, allowing another run to score, followed
by another run-scoring ground ball up the middle by Austin Warren.

With Albany now trailing by only one run, Williams struck out three batters to hold Alameda scoreless in the
top of the sixth.  In the bottom of the inning, Grady Camps walked and reached third base on wild pitches.
Williams then walked and stole second to set the stage for Love’s game-winning smash single in the hole between short and third.

July 7 -- Albany 10 Continental 9

Sevrin Weiss and Henry Rosenfeld scored on a two-out single by Austin Warren and then Grady Camps

over-the-shoulder catch of a deep fly to center with the bases loaded to end the inning.  With Continental now trailing
by only one run in the bottom of the sixth, closer Jordan Williams got three consecutive batters to ground out,

The 2008 all-star season is just around the corner. Here is some information for players and parents.

TEAMS.
Albany Little League selects two teams in the 9s-10s and 10s-11s categories and one team for both the Majors (11s-12s) and Juniors divisions (12s-14s). Teams carry 11-14 players.

ELIGIBILITY.
Players must have played in 60 percent of their Little League games.
Strict rules govern participation in all-stars. Players are required to submit three proofs of residency (from a list set by Little League) and an original birth certificate.

MANAGERS & COACHES.
Albany Little League’s board of directors selects the managers and coaches, taking into account, among other things, their experience, success and availability. Teams can be together almost every day for as long as seven or eight weeks.
Each team has one manager and two coaches (one coach if less than 13 players). Teams must begin a game with 13 players for the team to have one manager and two coaches on the field.

PLAYER SELECTIONS.
The first nine players for the Juniors, Majors and the 10-11 #1 teams are chosen by their peers, league players voting for their top nine players in balloting held at the end of the season.
The first nine players for the 9-10 #1 team are chosen by a vote of AAA managers and coaches. The remaining players on these teams and all players on the 9-10 and 10-11 #2 teams are chosen by their manager.

ANNOUNCEMENTS.
The all-star season begins with the announcement of the selections on June 15 and practice for two or three weeks before play begins in late June or early July.

COMPETITION.
All-Star competition begins with the District 4 tournament involving teams in Alameda and Contra Costa Counties. The tournament is double-elimination, meaning a team must lose twice to be knocked out. (Several Albany teams have come all the way back through the loser's bracket after losing their opening game -- that is, they won six games in six straight days -- to play in the district championship game.

SCHEDULES.
All District 4 schedules and brackets (all-stars and TOC) are available at:
http://www.eteamz.com/California4/handouts/

HOME SCHEDULE.
Albany Little League will host a record number of all-star games at the University Village and Memorial Park.
Volunteers are needed to help out with the many all-star games Albany will be hosting. Team parents are expected to share with the responsibilities of organizing home games.
Key volunteers for these games include tournament director, scorekeeper, p.a. announcer and snack shack person.

North Oakland  0 0 0 - 0 0 0 - 0 ... 0 2 2

The team included seven 13-year-old players who are eligible to return in 2009.

with two hits and two RBI. Nick Kubler recorded the last out by making a sliding catch against the right-field fence.

Albany rallied to beat Alameda on a 2-run walk-off single by Marrion Love in the bottom of the sixth inning. Alameda led, 8-3,
going into the bottom of the fifth when Jordan Williams led off with a single, followed by
three consecutive batters – Love, Liam Knowles and Henry Rosenfeld – safely reaching first base to score one
run. Nathan Greco then hit a towering sacrifice fly to deep right center to score a second run.  Max
Katz-Balmes
then hit a sharp grounder to shortstop which was bobbled, allowing another run to score, followed
by another run-scoring ground ball up the middle by Austin Warren.

Albany got off to a quick start by scoring five runs in the top of the first on aggressive base-running by leadoff batter,
Max Katz-Balmes, and singles by Avery Tonkyn, Jordan Williams and Ihson Nassiri.  In the top of the fourth,
Sevrin Weiss and Henry Rosenfeld scored on a two-out single by Austin Warren and then Grady Camps
knocked in Warren with a drive up the middle.  Weiss and Rosenfeld both scored again in the fifth when Leo Pollack
smashed a double over the head of Continental’s centerfielder.

Continental came back with five runs in the bottom of the fifth to make the game close. Weiss made a game-saving,
over-the-shoulder catch of a deep fly to center with the bases loaded to end the inning.  With Continental now trailing
by only one run in the bottom of the sixth, closer Jordan Williams got three consecutive batters to ground out,
but not without some great defense at second base from Avery Tonkyn.

multiple-hit games, while outfielders Theo Lewis-Miller, Elijzah Casanares and Orion Lewallen were outstanding

Oscar Brown smoked a key hit in the fourth inning to break the game open.

July 7 -- Albany #2 1 Concord American 11
Albany mounted their only scoring threat in the fifth, when Billy Treseler singled sharply to left,
advanced to third on Jeremiah Holmes' booming double to left center, and scored on Cameron James' single.
Elijzah Casanares got two hits and continued his strong play in center field, and Orion Lewallen pitched
well in his first outing of the tournament.

July 9 -- Albany #2 2 North Oakland 3 (7 innings)
Albany bowed out of the tournament despite an outstanding pitching performance by Cameron James, who
