ALBANY (District 4)... 2
Petaluma (District 35).. 1
The four team double elimination tournament began Saturday July 6th. On Saturday,
District 4 (Albany East Bay) lost to District 35 (Petaluma) and District
53 (Benicia) lost to District 64 (Vacaville). On Sunday, Albany won, 6-4,
to eliminate Benicia and Petaluma beat Vacaville to remain undefeated.
On Monday, Albany (District 4) beat Vacaville in the final loser bracket
game. Tuesday, Albany beat Petaluma in their re-match, 10-8, to give
both teams a 3-1 record. Wednesday, Albany completed its come-from-behind
run with a second win over Disctrict 35 (Petaluma) 2 to 1.
Stephen Degange's report: --
It was a magnificent game, played flawlessly by both teams.
With two outs in the top of the sixth inning, District 4 bunched four
singles together to score two runs. The key hit was a two RBI rope by first
baseman Mitch Minger of Walnut Creek.
Winning pitcher Jeff Choate surrendered only one hit in the game, a
long home run to opposing pitcher Bud Glock in the bottom of the sixth. But
Choate retired the side in order in the bottom of the seventh to protect
the victory.
Choate threw back to back one-hitters on Monday and Wednesday.

June 19 (Memorial Park): East County 4, Albany
5 - Albany crafted it's most exciting finish with three runs in
the seventh inning to come from behind and beat East County on it's last
at bat.
Trailing 4 - 2, pinch-hitter Matt Thompson slashed
a single to right. Marcus Turner was hit by a pitch. Both scored to tie the
game when Powell DeGange stroked a double to the fence in right-center. A
balk moved DeGange to third base to set up a text book, suicide squeeze play.
With one strike on Joe Manoleas, DeGange broke for home as the pitcher released
the ball. Manoleas dropped a bunt toward first base that ran inches inside
the white base line.
With DeGange across the plate, the drama was only whether the ball would
go foul. As the first baseman hovered in agony, the ball stopped
rolling 15 feet short of the bag -- on fair ground.
Emmanuel Mejia earned the victory with two innings of relief work that included
three strikeouts. Newcomer Archie Gilbert turned several apparent hits into
fly ball outs with long, running catches in left field. |

June21st (Memorial Park) Walnut Creek 6,
Albany 9
Albany¹s four game wining streaked almost ended with some late inning
defensive lapses. Almost. The team lead 5-0 after four innings, getting superb
3-hit, shutout pitching from Jason Lee-Broullon. Walnut Creek scored two
in the 5th and three more in the 6th to knot the game. Albany, as always,
responded dramatically in their half of the inning with a walk to Dan Thompson,
a single by Matt Goyne, a double by Marcus Turner that drove in two runs,
a single by Powell DeGange that drove in another and a final RBI
fielder¹s choice by Archie Gilbert.
The hitting star of the game for Albany was Turner who had three hits, scored
three runs and drove in three. The team¹s first place record
is 7-2. -- Stephen DeGange, reporter |
June 19 (Santa Rosa):
| Albany 5, Mark West 2 (first game)
--
Albany continued its winning ways in a well-played, 5-2 victory over Mark
West in Santa Rosa. Ryan Bahadosingh pitched a complete game 5-hit victory
with 8 strike outs. The offensive gem of the game was turned in by Emmanuel
Mejia who unloaded a monster mash of a home run over the left field wall
in the top of the first inning. Mejia added a double in his next at bat.
Bahadosingh aided his own cause by driving in 3 runs. Albany 6, Mark West 3 (second game) --
In the nightcap, Albany took the lead early, lost it, and regained it. Again,
the pitching was superb. Matt Goyne started, went 3 innings and gave up 2
unearned runs. Jason Lee-Broullon took over in the fourth and gave up a paltry
2 hits and 1 run the rest of the way.
