Game 1: Albany 6 South Oakland 5, 8 innings
Alex Rowland scored Shan Dhaliwahl with a walk off single in the bottom of the 8th to complete an exciting 6-5 comeback victory for Albany. Rowland's clutch
double in the bottom of the 6th had tied the score at 5. Parker Denison pitched 6 strong innings and Calvin Bernard was flawless in 2 innings of relief to pick up the
victory. Albany made several stellar defensive plays, none bigger than Gideon Lebowitz's run-saving diving catch in left which resulted in an inning ending double play.
Game 2: Albany 4 Concord American 3
In another thriller, Carl Jacobs' bases loaded grounder scored Reed Thomas-McLean with the winning run in the bottom of the 7th inning. Jack Johnson snared a fly ball
and fired a strike from right field to Calvin Bernard to nail a runner at home to preserve the tie in the top of the inning. Jacobs held down Concord American for four
innings before giving way to Collin Calloway who was outstanding in relief, yielding no runs in 3 innings for the victory. Calloway and Alex Rowland had two hits each.
Game 3: Albany 16 Pinole-Hercules 5
After falling behind 2-0, then again 5-2, the Albany Juniors’ bats went berserk in the bottom of the 5th inning. Up and down the lineup, the boys just kept hitting
and hitting. Finally, with two men on, Jack Johnson hit a 300 foot bomb to end the game via the mercy rule. 14 runs and only two outs in the 5th. None of the
coaches or parents had ever seen anything quite like that performance by any team – especially after not looking particularly strong in the first 4 innings.
Just a few other highlights included Gideon Lebowitz’ suicide squeeze to bring home Collin Calloway for the 6th and Game Winning run; Doubles by
Carl Jacobs, Reed Thomas-Mclean, Alex Rowland, Gideon L., Parker Denison, and I’m sure I’ve missed others.
Denison and Jacobs combined for the pitching duties.
Game 4: Albany 11 Concord American 3
Albany wins District 4 Championship!
The Albany Juniors met a strong Concord American team in the District 4 Championship on Wednesday. Albany got off to a quick start with both Shan Dhaliwal
and Reed Thomas-McLean scoring on an Alex Rowland sacrifice fly in the first. Parker Denison was masterful on the mound for the first 5 innings, helping
preserve a narrow 2-1 lead. The Albany offense then caught fire scoring four runs in the 5th and five more in the 6th to break the game open. Their bats continued
to be very productive throughout the lineup, with Calvin Bernard and Denison leading the charge with two key RBI hits each. Carl Jacobs and Daniel Dempster
each worked an inning on the mound to close out an impressive 11-3 win. The team played its best defensive game of the tournament and looked poised
and ready for the upcoming Section tournament in Petaluma.
The Star: Parker Denison pitched five solid innings and gave up two hits, holding the lead for the Albany Junior All-Stars until it exploded for nine runs over the last two innings.
The Turning Point: Albany's two-out rally in the sixth inning clinched the District 4 championship. Concord American's Brandon Oswald gave up back-to-back walks after retiring
the first two batters, and then gave up three straight doubles to the heart of the Albany order.
The Quote: "(Denison) was at his best and he's the horse of our staff. He did a great job," Albany manager Chris McLean said.
What's Next? Albany will play District 64 in the first round of the Section 1 tournament at 2 p.m., on Saturday at Casa Grande High in Petaluma.
The Bottom Line: By defeating Concord American, Albany doesn't have to play a second game to decide the District 4 championship.
The Albany Junior All Stars didn't want to play another game to prove they were the District 4 champions. And they won't have to. Albany would have had to lose twice
to lose the title, but pulled away late in the first championship game, clinching the title with an 11-3 win at the North Oakland Little League fields Wednesday. "All
tournament we've been getting stronger as the game goes on. It's just another great example," manager Chris McLean said. "We don't give up. We've got a really
balanced team with a lot of really good fielders and hitters." After taking a 2-0 lead after the first, Albany didn't score again until the fifth. Starting pitcher Parker
Denison helped his own cause by hitting a deep drive to center, which hopped over the fence for a ground-rule double to score Alex Rowland and Calvin
Bernard. Albany scored two more runs to build a 7-2 lead after five innings, and packed on five more runs in the sixth to seal the win. Denison kept Albany in the game
early by striking out six, giving up two hits and walking just two batters, but said he could do better. "I've given up less walks before," Denison said. "A couple of innings
I struggled, but I felt good." He added that his fundamentals helped him hit a pair of doubles at the plate. Concord American manager Wayne Horvot said his team
just got out-hit. "(Albany) started getting the bat on the ball," Horvot said. "They're just a better hitting team than us today. They over-exceeded my expectations
since I took this team on. I'm very proud of their effort today."

Game 1: vs. Davis at Casa Grande HS in Petaluma at 2 PM, Saturday
July 17 – Davis 6, Albany 2
The Albany Juniors ran into a hot pitcher in Davis’ Matt Trask on Saturday. Albany was able to put runners in scoring position, but just couldn’t get the big
hits to break through. Collin Calloway, Daniel Dempster, Shan Dhaliwal and Carl Jacobs shared pitching duties and were able to hold down Davis’ powerful
offense in the last few innings. Jacobs also turned in a stellar play at 3rd base, snaring a line drive and turning it into an inning ending double play to keep
Albany within striking distance. Reed Thomas-McLean had two hits and an RBI for Albany.
Game 2: July 18 – Albany 7, San Francisco 5
Albany and San Francisco battled through a tight game, with Albany breaking through for 3 runs in the 6th inning to go ahead for good. Albany used several pitchers
including Parker Denison, Shan Dhaliwal and Carl Jacobs. Jacobs was able to retire the side in order in the 6th and 7th to preserve the win. Collin Calloway had
3 hits and scored the tying run on a wild pitch with two-out in the 6th. Alex Rowland, who had 2 hits, then followed with a big RBI single to score what proved to
be the game winning run.
Game 3 July 19:
Albany looks forward to a rematch with Davis in the Loser’s bracket on Monday night. Benicia, who beat San Francisco 6-1 on Saturday, and Petaluma Valley,
who beat Davis 6-5 in the bottom of the 7th during Sunday’s morning game, go at it Monday in a Winner’s match-up.

North Oakland 0 0 0 - 0 0 0 - 0 ... 0 2 2
Ryan Masterson pitched a two-hit shutout and scored the game's first run in the fifth inning to lead Albany past one of its archrivals. Masterson gave up a pair of singles with two outs in the bottom of the second
inning but struck out the next batter looking to get out of the jam. He retired the last 11 North Oakland batters and finished with eight strikeouts -- including five in a row in the fourth and fifth innings. Albany
broke open a scoreless game by batting around in the fifth and sixth innings. Masterson led off the three-run fifth inning with a single to right center, moved to second base on Colin Armstrong's sacrifice
bunt and scored on Patrick Xu's double that eluded the diving North Oakland center fielder. After Jesse Santos was hit by pitch and Paul Kennedy was safe on a error by the shortstop to load the bases, Zachary
Chiang walked to score the second run, and Kyle Harty Strang singled to drive in the third run of the inning. Albany broke the game open with five runs in the sixth inning. Santos hit a bloop to left center to
score the first run. Nathan Gill drove in the second run with a line drive to left field for his second hit of the game. Two more runs came in on Marcellus Love's single to center field, and Garrett Freeberg closed out
the scoring with an RBI single to left field.
July 3 -- Albany 9 Clayton Valley 3
Clayton Valley 1 0 0 - 0 2 0 - 0 ... 3 4 2
Albany .......... 0 0 0 - 2 0 7 - x ... 9 12 2
Albany rallied for seven runs in the bottom of the sixth to move into the final of the winner's bracket on Monday at Memorial Park. Marquess Valdez singled with one out, took second base on a wild pitch and
was safe on a close play at third when winning pitcher Nathan Gill hit a ball off the leg of the pitcher. Marcellus Love singled home Valdez with the tying run, and Patrick Xu's RBI single scored Gill with the
go-ahead run. Love scored when Nick Lamb executed a perfect suicide squeeze and was safe when the ball was thrown away at first base. Jesse Santos broke the game open with a two-run double down the
left-field line. Albany closed out the scoring on RBI singles by Kyle Harty Strang and Griffin Goetz.
Gill allowed only one run in six innings on the mound. He left with Albany leading, 2-1, and returned in the top of the fifth inning with the scored tied, 2-2, and the bases loaded and no outs. He got the first batter
out on a sacrifice fly to Paul Kennedy in right center, induced the second batter to hit a grounder to Harty Strang for a force out at home and got out of the inning on soft line drive to Santos at shortstop.
Albany had taken a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the fourth when Harty Strang walked, Kennedy was safe at second on an error, and Garrett Freeberg drove both runners home with a single to left field.
Freeberg had made a key play in the top of the inning. With Clayton Valley leading, 1-0, Freeberg nailed a runner at home after backing up on an overthrow at third base.
July 7 -- Albany 5 South Oakland 2
South Oakland 0 0 0 - 0 0 2 - 0 ... 2 6 7
Albany .......... 2 0 2 - 0 0 1 - x ... 5 3 2
Ryan Masterson won his second game of the tournament, limiting South Oakland to two unearned runs in
six innings on the mound. He struck out seven batters before giving way to reliever Jesse Santos, who
struck out three batters in the seventh inning after walking the first batter and earned the save.
Albany took advantage of some poor South Oakland fielding to jump out to a 4-0 lead after three innings. In the first inning, Santos walked with one out, was safe at second when the South Oakland second
baseman was ruled to have obstructed Santos on his way to second base on Kyle Harty Strang's infield grounder. Santos scored on Nathan Gill's single to right field, and Harty Strang came home when the
South Oakland catcher's toss back to the pitcher was thrown away. In the third inning, Patrick Xu walked, and Santos was safe when the South Oakland left fielder dropped his line drive. Both Albany
runners came home when the South Oakland shortstop drew away the ball on Gill's ground ball.
South Oakland scored two runs in the top of the sixth inning, but Santos got Albany out of the inning
without further damage when his throw from center field nailed the South Oakland runner trying to
score from second base for the third out of the inning.
Albany's fifth run came in the bottom of the sixth inning when pinchrunner Garrett Freeberg was safe at home on a wild pitch.
July 9 -- Albany 9 South Oakland 5
Albany.......... 0 7 0 - 1 0 0 - 1 ... 9 16 1
South Oakland 0 0 2 - 0 0 1 - 2 ... 5 8 5
Albany completed a four-game sweep of the District 4 Tournament with a 9-5 win over defending champion South Oakland. Albany chased the SOLL starting pitcher, sending 13 batters to the
plate and scoring seven runs in the second inning. Nathan Gill, Tom Miller and Garrett Freeberg loaded the bases, and Paul Kennedy drove in the first run with a sacrifice fly to deep left field. Griffin Goetz
singled to load the bases, and Zach Chiang drove in a run on a forceout. With two out, Patrick Xu
singled to drive in a run, Jesse Santos drove in two runs with a single to left field, and Gill's 2-run RBI
double closed out the scoring.
Pitchers Miller, Xu and Gill worked in and out of trouble all evening. Miller, the winning pitcher, got out of based-loaded jams in the first and third innings, and Xu, who relieved Miller in the fourth, had the bases
loaded in his first inning of work and retired the side on an infield grounder. Gill came on to close the game
and retired the last three batters after South Oakland had pulled to within 9-5 with a runner on second
base and no outs.
Albany had many chances to break open the game but only added two runs. The eighth Albany run scored on an overthrow by the South Oakland catcher to third base in the fourth inning, and Xu drove in the
ninth run in the top of the seventh inning with his fourth hit of the game.
July 11 -- Albany 11 Benicia 1
Benicia 0 0 1 - 0 0 ... 1 2 1
Albany 0 0 5 - 6 x ... 11 12 0
Ryan Masterson won his third game of all-star play, firing a two-hitter in four innings of work in the Section 1 opener. Tom Miller retired the side in order to close out the game shortened by the mercy rule.
Albany took the lead with five runs in the bottom of the third. Jesse Santos was safe on an error, and Kyle Harty-Strang and Nathan Gill singled to load the bases. Albany went ahead on walks to Garrett
Freeberg and Paul Kennedy. Zachary Chiang singled in two runners, and Kennedy scored on a wild pitch to complete the scoring.
In the fourth, Albany again sent 10 batters to the plate. After Harty Strang walked, and Gill singled for his third hit of the game, Freeberg drove in Harty Strang with a single. Marcellus Love singled to load the
bases, and Albany broke the game open when Chiang singled to score one run, and Patrick Xu and Santos had 2-run RBI.
July 13 -- Albany 11 Vacaville Central 1
Albany ................ 0 2 5 - 1 3 ... 11 11 0
Vacaville Central 1 0 0 - 0 0 ... 1 4 3
Albany improved to 6-0 in all-star play and moved into the semifinals of the Section 1 Tournament with its second blowout win in two days. Zachary Chiang and Patrick Xu combined to throw a four-hitter.
Albany got out of trouble in the first inning when catcher Marcellus Love threw out a runner trying to take third base on a strikeout, and Chiang picked off a runner at second base. Chiang got out of trouble in
the second inning by striking out three batters. He finished with six strikeouts in three innings. Xu needed only 13 pitches to hurl two scoreless innings. All outs were recorded on groundballs, including a 6-4-3
double play.
Albany took the lead in the second inning when Paul Kennedy doubled to right center and scored when Chiang was safe on an error by the third baseman. Chiang scored on Xu's sacrifice fly to left field.
Albany broke the game open with five runs in the third inning. Love drove in Nathan Gill with a single, and
Kennedy again doubled to drive in Garrett Freeberg and Love. After Chiang and Nick Lamb
singled, Jesse Santos drove home two more runners with a single to make the score 7-1.
Kennedy extended Albany's lead to 8-1 with a 320-foot home run over the fence in left center in the fourth inning, and Gill cleared the bases in the fifth with a double, scoring Tom Miller, Santos and Kyle Harty Strang.
July 15 -- Albany 2 Healdsburg 1
Healdsburg 0 0 0 - 1 0 0 - 0 ... 1 6 1
Albany ...... 0 0 0 - 1 1 0 - x ... 2 3 2
Albany moved into the Section 1 championship game with a nail-biting victory over Healdsburg. It got RBI singles from Paul Kennedy and Kyle Harty Strang to rally from a 1-0 deficit. But as it has been
throughout Albany's 7-0 run in all-star play, its defense was the difference.
Albany got out of a jam in the third inning when starting pitcher Nathan Gill put down the tag on catcher Marcellus Love's throw to get the third out on a Healdsburg runner trying to score on a wild pitch.
Shortstop Jesse Santos recorded 6-4 and 6-3 double plays to erase threats in the fourth and fifth innings. In the sixth inning, Kennedy, the center fielder, chased down a ball hit to deep right center.
Gill pitched the first four innings before being relieved by Patrick Xu in the fifth inning. With one out in the seventh inning, Santos came on with runners on first and second. After the first batter hit a bloop single
to center field to load the bases, Santos got the second out when Love made a sprawling catch on a foul ball behind the plate. After falling behind 2-0 and then 3-1 in the count, Santos induced Healdsburg's
cleanup batter to ground out to Gill at third base on a 3-2 pitch and end the game.
Albany was limited to three singles. Santos led off the fourth inning with a walk and scored from third on Kennedy's two-out single. In the fifth inning, Xu blooped a two-strike curve ball down the left-field
line for a single and raced to third when Santos grounded out to second base on a hit-and-run play.
With two outs, Harty Strang beat out a grounder deep into the hole at shortstop for the go-ahead run.
July 17 -- Albany 0 Benicia 6
Benicia 0 1 0 - 0 3 2 - 0 ... 6 5 0
Albany 0 0 0 - 0 0 0 - 0 ... 0 6 7
Albany's run in the Junior League All-Stars Tournament ended one game shy of the state championship
when it fell to Benicia in a rematch of their opening game won by Albany, 11-1.
Albany's fielding, the cornerstone of its success throughout its seven-game run, deserted it in the Section 1 championship. All six Benicia runs were unearned. Albany outhit Benicia, 6-5, and had several other
well-hit balls caught by Benicia fielders.
The 14-year-old age group finished its Albany career having won the district or finished second every year (champions as 11s and 14s and second as 10s and 12s). The team included seven 13-year-old players
who are eligible to return in 2009.

JUNIOR LEAGUE (COMPLETED) WINNER'S BRACKET First Round July 2 Albany 2 East County 3 Albany lost a heartbreaker as East County rallied for two runs in the bottom of the seventh. Ben Cerami had pitched masterfully for six-plus innings before going out.
LOSER'S BRACKET First Round July 5 Albany 11 Lafayette 0 Yoshi Uemura, Nick Dale, Tommy McCoy and Jesse Schumacher combined for a no-hitter. The Albany pitchers retired the last 15 batters after the first two batters walked. Schumacher went 3-for-3 with a home run and triple for four RBI.
Second Round July 6 Albany 18 Clayton Valley 1 Albany scored in every inning, finishing with nine runs in the 6th inning. Ben Cerami had three hits and four RBI. Brian Bernard had three hits, including two doubles, and Alex Jones had three hits with a double and two RBI. Jesse Santos was 2-for-2 with a walk, and Ryan Masterson had two hits in the 6th when Albany sent 15 batters to the plate. At the top of the order, Justin Maxwell and Kai Huntamer combined to score seven runs.
Quarterfinals July 7 Albany 8 East County 7 (11 innings) Albany beat East County in a four-hour marathon to gain revenge for its loss to East County in its opening game. Like that game, East County rallied from one run down in the 7th inning to take the lead. In the bottom of the seventh, Albany was down to its last out when Justin Maxwell went to third base on a delayed steal and then scored on a wild pitch.
In the top of the 9th inning, East County's leadoff hitter hit a two-run homer over the right-field fence to give the team from the far reaches of Contra Costa a 7-5 lead. It had runners on first and second and no outs, but Leib Sutcher came on in relief to retire the side. In the bottom of the ninth, Albany tied the score on RBI doubles by Nick Dale and Kai Huntamer but for the second straight inning had the winning run at third base with one out but couldn't end the suspense.
In the bottom of the 11th, Sutcher, who pitched three innings of scoreless relief to get the win, led off with a walk. Huntamer followed with a fly ball that the left fielder -- an extra-innings illness replacement -- lost in the wind and sun. Brian Bernard loaded the bases with a long fly ball that the left fielder again was unable to track down, and Ben Cerami drove home Sutcher with the winning run on a long single to left field -- his fifth hit of the game.
Albany survived despite leaving 19 runs on base -- 13 in scoring position.
For East County, it was the second heartbreaking defeat in less than 24 hours. It lost to North Oakland, 6-5, in the semifinals of the winner's bracket on Friday night after coming back from 3-2 down to take a 5-3 lead in the top of the 7th inning only to blow it with two outs and two strikes in the bottom of the inning.
East County 1 1 0 - 1 0 0 - 2 0 2 - 0 0 -- 7 11 4 Albany ....... 0 3 1 - 0 0 0 - 1 0 2 - 0 1 -- 8 14 2
Semifinals July 9 Albany 11 Walnut Creek 1 For the second time in a week, Albany's hurlers threw a no-hitter. Winning pitcher Nick Dale and Yoshi Uemura combined to shut down Walnut Creek: seven strikeouts, seven groundouts and three walks after the leadoff hitter flew out to right field. Dale and Uemura also pitched in the other no-hitter, an 11-0 win over Lafayette.
Albany broke open the game with four runs in the 4th inning and four more in the 5th. Leib Sutcher, who had two RBI for the second straight game, had the key at-bat in the 4th with a perfectly executed suicide squeeze bunt that the Walnut Creek pitcher then threw away at first base.
In the 5th, Albany put the game away after the first two batters were retired. Uemura (2-for-2 at the plate) singled, Sutcher was hit by a pitch, and Paul Kennedy drove home Uemura with an RBI single to right field. After Brian Bernard was hit by a pitch, Sutcher and Kennedy scored on Ben Cerami's grounder past the Walnut Creek third baseman, and Bernard scampered home with the deciding run -- his third run of the game -- on a wild pitch.
Walnut Creek 0 0 0 - 1 0 -- 1 0 4 Albany ......... 1 2 0 - 4 4 -- 11 7 0
Final July 10 Albany 5 North Oakland 4 Two games ago, Albany won in 11 innings after being down to their last out in the 7th inning and later trailing by two in the 9th inning. On Tuesday night, the Juniors outdid themselves, rallying from two runs down in their last at-bat and taking the lead on a two-run single by Leib Sutcher, the Albany talisman, with two outs and two strikes.
Caldecott Field, nestled in the Oakland hills, was the stage and the city of San Francisco, where the nation's attention was fixed on the Major League All-Star Game, was the distant backdrop for the final game of Albany's march back through the loser's bracket and into the championship game. With rare summer rain coming down, Albany rallied from 4-2 down in the 7th.
Ben Cerami led off with a grounder that the North Oakland threw baseman threw away, and Yoshi Uemura drove pinchrunner Nick Dale home from second with his sixth straight hit over the last three games. After one out, Justin Maxwell walked, and Paul Kennedy advanced Uemura and Maxwell with a grounder up the middle that the North Oakland second baseman smothered with a sensational play for the second out. Sutcher, who had also driven in a pair of runs in each of his previous two games, then worked the count to 2-and-2 and smashed a hard-hit ball up the middle to score the tying and go-ahead runs.
North Oakland put two runners on with one out in the bottom of the 7th, but Cerami induced the final two hitters to fly out to Kai Huntamer in center field and Alex Jones in right and seal the comeback win, Albany's fifth straight victory after opening with a 3-2 loss in its opener.
Slugger Timmy Caleo, a longtime Albany nemesis, gave North Oakland a 2-0 lead with a monstrous two-run home run in the 1st inning, but starting pitcher Tommy McCoy and Cerami limited NOLL to four singles the rest of the way and helped the Albany cause with their work at the plate. McCoy drove in Kennedy with an RBI single in the 2nd inning, and Cerami tied the score on a towering shot over the fence with two out in the 5th inning.
North Oakland went ahead in the 5th inning on a one-out sacrifice fly to right field that Huntamer grabbed nicely to prevent further trouble. In the 6th, after the home team got out of a bases-loaded jam in the top half of the inning, it added to its lead on an infield single and had runners at first and third with one out, but Cerami struck out the next batter and retired the side on a grounder to Jesse Santos at second base.
A two-run lead with only three outs to go had the Caldecott locals thinking of a NOLL-SOLL rematch in the championship, but they learned -- much to their dismay -- that such a margin is not safe against Sutcher and the boys from Albany.
Albany ......... 0 1 0 - 0 1 0 - 3 -- 5 7 1 North Oakland 2 0 0 - 0 1 1 - 0 -- 4 6 3
CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES July 11 Albany 4 South Oakland 10 Albany's dreams of back-to-back District 4 Junior League titles ended when it fell to South Oakland in the championship game before a large contingent of Albany supporters who had made their way to Oakland's Caldecott Field.
The game turned in the first inning before many of the fans had a chance to settle in down the sidelines. Albany got a run when Kai Huntamer doubled and Yoshi Uemura drove him home with his seventh straight hit of the postseason. But South Oakland escaped from a bases-loaded jam without any further damage and retaliated with five runs of its own on two walks, a single, a fielder's choice and three-run home run.
South Oakland pulled ahead, 10-2, but relievers Leib Sutcher and Brian Bernard kept Albany in the game with shutout ball in the last three innings. Cerami was the Albany batting star with a shot off the top of the left-field fence for a double in the third inning and a home run over the center-field fence in the seventh.

2006 Albany Junior All-Stars

The Albany
Juniors champions in front of their district and sectional banners:
Back row (L-R): Manager Tim Goodman, Kenji Quides, Mark Arakaki, Kai
Huntamer, Marco Santos, Jake Alaniz, Danny Jacobs, Brian Bernard, Coach
Duane Focht; Front row: Nick Greco, Cole Goodman, David Shor, Luke
Davis, Corey Cisney, Jon Cheng.
The Junior League All-Stars advanced farther than any team in the 51-year history of the Albany Little League. The Juniors swept the District 4 tournament, won the Section 1 tournament and finished third in the State Championship in Milpitas.
The Junior League All-Stars set the tone with a sweep of the District 4
Junior League championship. They won with timely hitting, strong
defense and stellar pitching.
In the first game, Cole Goodman lofted a home run that exceeded 300
feet over the center field fence at Memorial Park to lift Albany past
Pinole-Hercules, 4-1.
Albany capped a four-game run with a 16-2 victory over North Oakland in
the championship game. Albany sent 26 batters to the plate in the first
three innings and scored 15 runs to put the game away. Kenji Quides did
the rest on the mound, firing a no-hitter.
At the Section 1 championship for teams from the greater Bay Area,
Albany avenged an 11-6 loss to San Francisco in its second game to beat
San Francisco twice (9-3 and 5-2) behind superb pitching from Jake
Alaniz and Quides. In the second game, catcher Jon Cheng provided the
big hit. With the bases loaded and two outs, Cheng singled on a 3-2
pitch to drive in the tying and eventual winning runs.
Despite temperatures that were as high as 108 degrees, Albany played
three tight games at the Division II (Northern California) state
championship in Milpitas. Albany fell to Bear River, 7-4, in the
semifinals. Bear River went on to finish third at the Western Regionals
in Oregon.
Eight players on Manager Tim Goodman's team had been on the Albany
Little League team that won the District 4 Little League championship
two years earlier: Mark Arakaki, Cole Goodman, Nick Greco, Kai

Journal
- June 30th (Clayton Valley)
Concord American 1, ALBANY 6
Coach Broderson's Journal Entry - Graeme Agate pitched
four shut out innings while we scratched ahead 2-0. We went up 5-0 in the
fourth inning with three straight run scoring hits after two were out. Our
"committee" of relief pitchers -- Lucas Cannon, Kyle Shipley and Chris Lamb
-- combined to hold Concord to one run.
Brendan Pickering's three hits in three at bats included a double that fought
through a stiff wind blowing in from left center field . Kyle Azi doubled
to deep right center.
- July 1st (Clayton Valley)
Clayton Valley 9, Albany 1
Journal Entry -- We were "flat" at the plate. The good news?
There were no major defensive lapses. Clayton Valley played solid baseball:
advancing runners and getting timely, well placed hits. Not much you can
do about that except come back strong the next game.
- July 2nd (Clayton Valley)
ALBANY 15, Lafayette 5
Journal Entry -- Did I say come back strong? ... Hitting
was not "flat." Graeme Agate doubled and Patrick Harrington hit two titanic
shots. (One was caught by an outfielder playing so deep he was off the radar).
Solid team defense was high lighted by Noah Isaacs. On one play at the plate,
Noah caught the throw while getting blasted by the runner and still applied
the tag.
... Tomorrow, Oakland.
- July 3rd (Oakland)
Albany 4, Oakland South 7
Journal Enry - The first five innings were punch, counter-punch
as the lead changed hands three times. Our mistakes in the field and timely
hitting gave Oakland its final edge. |

Saturday July 22d --
ALBANY 7, Mill Valley 5 (8 innings):
A three run homer by Matt Ball (below)
sent Albany ahead, 5-2, but Mill Valley completed a come back with three
unearned runs to tie the gameafter seven innings. Lou
Worth's 280 foot drive beyond the reach of the left fielder drove
in two go ahead runs in the eighth.
Sunday July 23d
ALBANY 7, Petaluma Valley 1
Lou Worth (below)
homered over the 300 foot sign in left field to bolt Albany ahead in the
top of the first inning, 2-0. Matt Ball stretched
the lead to 4-0 with a home run in the fifth, then to 5-0 with another home
run in the
seventh.
Michael Clement pitched a complete game
shut out four hitter until two were out in the seventh, when Petaluma scored
its only run -- unearned.
From center field, Eddie Izumisaki quashed
Petaluma's threat in the fourth inning with runners on second and third.
With none out, he charged in to catch a sinking line drive and return the
ball to the infield before runners could advance then, with two out, he swept
a fly ball off the top of the center field fence to save a home run and end
the inning.
In the fifth, Joe Manoleas slammed the
door from right field. With one out, Joe snagged a drive in right center
field then wirled to throw out the runner who strayed too far off first
base.
In the sixth, Matt Ball and Robert Diaz
wiped out Petaluma with a double play, 6 to 4 to 3.
Monday July 24th --
Albany 1, Benecia 5 (winner bracket)
Mill Valley 0, Petaluma Valley 11 (loser bracket)
Vince Phillips' report: Albany batters struck
out only once and walked twice. The rest of the time they sprayed balls all
over the field. Unfortunately, the ball usually went to someone.
It didn't help in the middle innings when the first base ump made
a very questionable "out" call against Matt Ball on a pickoff play for the
first out (the videotape shows he got back in time) in an inning where Albany
scored it's only run.
Albany had solid defense behind Eddie Izumizaki's pitching (left),
but Benicia put together timely hits to score single runs in the first, second
and third and a pair in the 6th before Paul Muse came in and got three outs
on 6 pitches.
Albany's only run was scored by Robert Diaz on Louie Worth's towering
single to left, 5 feet short of a being a 2-run dinger.
Tuesday July 25th --
Petaluma Valley 9, Albany 3 (loser bracket final)
On a perfect baseball evening -- 80 degrees and the sky a California
clear blue -- Albany met the perfect lead off hitter. Petaluma's catcher
scorched the game's second pitch out of the park. Three more runs scored
before Albany got three put outs to end the first inning. When the same batter
hit a three run bomb in the fourth, Petaluma went ahead 7-1. Albany had nine
hits (three by Eddie Izumizaki); but all were
singles and none was bunched. Two runs scored on hits by
Michael Clement.

Cole pitched the first inning. When we scored 8 in the bottom of the first,
we sent Noam Kopmar out to pitch the second. He cruised along until the top
of the fifth. Then Powell came in to close out the game.
Sternberg has his stroke back. He had three sharp singles tonight. Chernicoff
had two more hits, as did Alex Sinclair. Tyler Nation, Ryan Nelson. Chernicoff
and Ian Stewart each drove in two.
We play North Oakland (who beat Pittsburgh National 14-0 tonight) at Concord

July 13 at Concord
North Oakland 12, Albany 5
We jumped ahead, 3-0, after 3 innings on RBI singles from Andre Sternberg
and Cole Stipovich. Unfortunately, we also stranded 8 baserunners in those
first three inings. Those missed opportunities would come back to haunt us.
North Oakland exploded for 6 runs in the bottom of the fourth and 6
more in the sixth.
We came back with 2 runs in the seventh inning, but again we left
three runnners stranded.
Sternberg finished the tournament batting .667 (8-12) and Ian Stewart compiled
a mind-boggling on-base percentage of .909, reaching base 10 times in 11
at bats.
