Game 1: Albany 11 Martinez 0
The Star: Albany's starting pitcher, Nathan Greco, came out strong from the start against Martinez on July 2. He struck out the first three batters, looking to set the tone
for the remainder of the game. Greco allowed two hits in his three innings of work.
The Turning Point: In the top of the first, Jeremiah Holmes hit a single to knock in the first of Albany's runs. After that, there was no looking back. The team went on to score
four runs in the first and finished with 11 by the end of the fifth.
The Quote: "I'm proud of the way these boys played," coach Frank Knowles said. "It was the first game and I think they did a fantastic job hitting."
Coming into the first round of the District 4 12-year-old All Star Tournament, the Albany team had something to prove. After allowing only two hits in an 11-0 victory
over Martinez on Friday, Albany showed it will be a serious contender for the district title. Albany wasted no time getting on the scoreboard, putting up four runs in the first
inning. Jeremiah Holmes, who knocked in the first run for his team, was hot at the plate all night. Holmes drove in four runs and hit a two-run homer in the fifth to cap off
the scoring for Albany. Manager Frank Knowles said several of his players had been playing with a 50-foot plate-to-mound distance, but tournament rules require just 46-feet.
"During our two scrimmages this week the boys were still adjusting at the plate because the ball is much faster at that distance (of 46 feet)," he said. "But today they hit great."
Holmes was not the only big hitter against Martinez. Willie Bass hit two doubles and earned two RBIs, while Avery Tonkyn went 3 for 4 at the plate and scored three runs.
Albany also showed up big at the mound, with starter Nathan Greco and relief pitcher Leo Pollack shutting down the Martinez offense. Greco struck out four batters
and allowed only two hits in three innings, and Pollack struck out three of the five batters he faced. "To be the starting pitcher in the first game of the tournament is an easy
way to get the jitters and get nervous," Knowles said. "But (Greco) pitched really well." Martinez manager Steve Therssen said his team hit well in practice, but could not get
solid contact against Albany's pitchers. "We just were well out-hit, and that was the difference," he said. Therssen also acknowledged the Albany defense, which turned two
double plays during the game. Martinez's only two hits came on singles from catcher Jeremy Therssen and shortstop Sam Nishita during the first. With Albany's strong performance
Friday, the team moves on in the winner's bracket to face Walnut Creek on Monday at 6 p.m. in Walnut Creek, where the players hope to continue their hitting streak.

Game 2: Albany 5 Walnut Creek 3
The Star: Leo Pollack might have entered as a reliever, but he pitched like a starter. Pollack threw four strong innings of relief en route to earning the win. He struck out six and didn't allow a run.
The Turning Point: Albany was holding onto a one-run lead in the fifth when Robbie Davison hit a one-out double for Walnut Creek. Pollack then forced Max Kulsuptrakul to pop out to
first and struck out Clayton Barker to end the inning and rally.
The Quote: "I feel relieved after that one," Albany coach Frank Knowles said. "This was a tight game that could have gone either way. I kind of have a sigh of relief after that one."
Albany won its last game 11-0. This win was a little tighter.
It squeaked past Walnut Creek with a 5-3 win in the second round of the District 4 Tournament. Albany relied on the left arm of Leo Pollack to carry the team to victory.
The southpaw threw four strong innings of relief, striking out six and did not give up a run. "The pitching was outstanding," Knowles said. "Leo did extremely well. He
really stepped up today." Albany struck first in the top of the first when lead-off hitter Liam Knowles reached on an error and scored on a Jordan Williams RBI single.
Walnut Creek countered with two runs of its own in the bottom of the first. Brian Wright and Jack Logan both scored on an Albany error to take the early lead. Albany
regained the lead in the top of the second behind an Andrew Whittmore double and Liam Knowles sacrifice fly. Walnut Creek tied the score on a Seth Bloom RBI
single. After three innings, the game was tied at three. Albany took the lead for good when Billy Treseler scored on a Liam Knowles RBI single. Albany added an insurance
run in the sixth on a Williams RBI single. "We played well enough to win today," Frank Knowles said. "We played some tight defense and had some timely hitting."
Knowles is glad to see the team play and win close games as it keeps the team from getting too confident. "It's good to play in these close games as it reminds the team
that they're not invincible," he said. "Games like these remind the team that they have to play hard all the time if they want to win."

Game 3: Albany 12 Pinole/Hercules 3
The Star: Jordan Williams was 5 for 5 on the day at the plate, including a two-run home run that started a seven-run sixth inning. He pitched a scoreless sixth inning to put the game away.
The Turning Point: With the game at 5-3 entering the final inning, Albany's Willie Bass and Jordan Williams hit two-run homers to help put the game out of Pinole-Hercules' reach.
The Quote: "He's a man of few words," said Albany manager Frank Knowles on Williams' good performance, but calm demeanor.
The Bottom Line: When the game seemed like it would come down to a close ending in the sixth, Albany pushed on the accelerator and pulled away. The team now gets two days off.
Albany Little League's Jordan Williams didn't have much to say after Wednesday's victory against Pinole-Hercules. His performance spoke for itself. Williams was 5 for 5
and scored a pair of runs as his team used a seven-run sixth inning as an exclamation point in a 12-3 blowout of Pinole-Hercules in Lafayette. "I was just doing good
today," said Williams. Count his coach as impressed. "Jordan got the big hit that got things rolling and was followed by Willie two batters later," Albany coach
Frank Knowles said. "That was really nice." Avery Tonkyn walked to start the sixth inning and Williams took a 1-1 pitch over the fence in right center to make
it a 7-3 game. Jeremiah Holmes then walked before Willie Bass belted a 2-1 pitch out of the park to secure a 9-3 advantage. Grady Camps hit a single to left
and Andrew Whittemore walked before Nathan Greco hit a bouncer down the third base line to drive them in. Greco would score on a ground ball from Avery
Tonkyn's ground ball to score the final run of the inning. Greco started the game for Albany and went three innings, allowing three runs on three hits and striking
out five en route to the win. Holmes pitched two scoreless innings and Williams finished off the sixth. "We're all set pitching wise," Knowles said. "All of our
pitchers are available for Saturday. We wanted to make sure we had all weapons available."

Game 4: Alameda 5 Albany 4
Albany jumped out to an early 4-0 lead against Alameda's number one pitcher. Andrew Whittemore got things started with a hard single up the middle. With
Andrew on base, the Alameda pitcher lost his control and Andrew ended up moving around the bases, scoring on three wild pitches during some epic at-bats
from Leo Pollack (11 pitches) and Avery Tonkyn (7 pitches resulting in a walk). Then Max Katz-Balmes took one for the team - in the arm - to put two runners on.
With two out, Jordan Williams crushed a 2-0 pitch, deep over the left/center field fence. Leo Pollack pitched a masterful three and a third innings
allowing only one big hit to the Alameda slugger. Albany gave up the lead after some very opportunistic hitting by the top of Alameda's order in the bottom of the
fourth. Albany threated in the 5th getting two runners on and again in the sixth. Liam Knowles lead off the sixth with a double to deep left center. After two
more walks, the bases were loaded with one out. Unfortunately, Albany hit into a force at home keeping the tying run at third. The final out was recorded after the
Alameda shortstop, who was playing to his left for a hit up the middle, made a nice play on a grounder to record the third out at second unassisted. Leo Pollack
and Nathan Greco combined to limit Alameda to five hits over five innings.
Game 5: South Oakland 3 Albany 2 (Albany eliminated)
The Star: South Oakland starter Sam Hollenbach gave up two runs on seven hits in 5 2/3 innings, while striking out six while and walking one. He also worked his way
out of a bases-loaded, no-out jam in the fourth to keep South Oakland's lead intact.
The Turning Point: Albany managed to load the bases with no outs in the fourth inning, but Albany couldn't push a run across.
The Quote: "That hurt. To get nobody home in that situation was frustrating," said Albany manager Frank Knowles of the fourth inning.
The Bottom Line: Albany lost a pair of one-run, tough-luck games (it lost to Alameda 5-4 Saturday) in being eliminated. Had a few more things gone its way,
Albany could still be contending on the road to Williamsport, Penn.
Albany Little League 12-year-old All Stars manager Frank Knowles wondered where the spark to his team's offense went on Tuesday. The team put up double-digit
runs in two of its three wins in the District 4 tournament, but in a 3-2 elimination-loss to South Oakland the offense went missing. The best shot for Albany came and went
in the fourth inning. Leo Pollack singled, Cameron James walked and Avery Tonkyn singled before a pair of strikeouts and a groundout ended the threat. "That hurt. I
think we had bases loaded and no outs and couldn't get a hit,"Knowles said. "To get nobody home in that situation was frustrating." Albany scored a run in the first.
Jordan Williams hit a two out double to right, advanced to third on an errant throw and scored on an infield single from Willie Bass. Tonkyn hit a home run to
straight-away center to give Albany a 2-0 lead in the second, but South Oakland responded in bottom half with a five-hit barrage, scoring all three of its runs. Knowles'
team couldn't solve South Oakland starter Sam Hollenbach. He nearly went the full distance, going 5 2/3 innings, but Andre Nnebe came in to get the save.
"Sammy's tough," Oakland manager Steve Bunner said. "He's just got great poise for a 12-year-old young man. I've been coaching him since he was eight years old
and he just shown me great concentration on the mound all year long. Knowles said his batters had trouble hitting off speed pitches and even tried moving them
up in the batter's box, to no avail. "The just couldn't get the bat on the ball and that's really what the difference was."

District 4 All-Stars (double-elimination)
LITTLE LEAGUE (11s-12s) (COMPLETED) WINNER'S BRACKET First Round July 6 Albany 6 Antioch West 5 (8 innings) Albany recovered from an Antioch West three-run homer that tied the game in the bottom of the 6th inning to win in extra innings. Colin Armstrong, who had homered earlier in the game, led off the top of the 8th with a single and was driven home by David Jacobs.
Marcellus Love got the win in relief, retiring Antioch West's best hitter, who had twice previously homered, on a high pop up to Gabe Scaglione in left field. Scaglione had pitched five-plus innings of long relief after taking the mound after one batter in the first inning.
Quarterfinals July 9 Albany 4 South Oakland 9 Nathan Gill and Patrick Xu homered in a losing effort. Adam Lieber drove in the other two runs with a double.
LOSER'S BRACKET Second Round July 10 Albany 9 Antioch East 2 Albany broke the game open in the 3rd inning was a two-run double by David Jacobs to right field. Albany cut short any chance of an Antioch East rally in the 5th inning when pitcher Marcellus Love struck out a batter, then catcher Jacobs fired the ball to third baseman Nathan Gill to nab a runner who was off the base for a doubleheader. Love pitched a complete game for the win.
Third Round July 11 Albany 5 Continental 1 Gabe Scaglione pitched a complete game to get the win for Albany.
Quarterfinals July 12 Albany 5 Walnut Creek 4 Elijah Cooper was sensational out of the bullpen, shutting down Walnut Creek for three innings after it took a 4-0 lead. Nathan Gill earned the save in his first appearance on the mound since the opening game of the tournament.
Semifinals July 13 South Oakland 3 Albany 1 Albany led the hard-hitting South Oakland, 1-0, going into the 5th inning. Starter Marcellus Love was outstanding on the mound. Patrick Xu drove in the only Albany run. The 12s finished in fourth place -- their best run in four years of postseason play.

Games
July 6th in Antioch
Antioch East 3, ALBANY 4
In the third inning, Tommy McCoy doubled to the wall and Miles McCreary
singled him home with what proved to be the winning run. Ben Cerami tired
in the sixth after pitching five strong innings.
In the sixth, East scored twice to close the score to 4-3. With runners
on second and third, none out, the call went to the bull pen for Kellon McGuire,
who came into a crisis and settled the peace. Strike out. Strike out. Ground
out. Game over. |
 |
July 7th in Lafeyette
Albany 4, Lafeyette 5
After leading 2-0 in the first and 4-0 in the fourth, Albany allowed
the winning run to score in the last of the sixth on a passed ball.
Ben Cerami's titanic home run backed Lucas Caldwell's first inning
single to begin scoring. Singles by Brian Bernard, Joe Riley, and Lucas cobbled
together two more runs in the fourth.
After Lafeyette rallied to tie the score, Tommy McCoy put out the
fire in relief, but Joe Riley's laser shot lead off single in the sixth was
followed by three quiet outs and then, in the field, the decisive throw-and-catch
misque .
. |
July 9th in Concord
ALBANY 6, Concord American 5
Ben Cerami grand slammed Albany to a first inning lead, which increased
to 5-0 in the fourth when Justine Maxwell tripled, then increased again to
6-0 when Ben singled and scored in the fifth.
But Concord scored five runs off replacement pitching in the fifth
before Ben entered in relief and stopped the bleeding. He came back to strike
out the side in the sixth.
Kellon McGuire gave up no hits, no runs, and struck out six through
four innings before he left the mound with a six run lead.
July 12th in Concord
Antioch West 2, ALBANY 8
Kellon McGuire and Coleman Lukas pitched three innings each and gave
up only three hits. Back to back doubles by Kellon and Brian Bernard and
a home run by Joe Riley vaulted Albany ahead 6-0 in the first inning. Cerami
hit his fourth jack of the tournament.
. |
July 11th in Concord
Clayton Valley 5, ALBANY 6
In 100 degree heat, Albany staged a Hollywood ending to its fourth
straight one-run game.
To start, Clayton Valley dinked and piddled in three runs, but Lucas
Caldwell led off for Albany with a double and Ben Cerami pole axed a massive,
long distance home run. After Clayton Valley got another run in the second,
Lucas doubled again to launch a go-ahead rally carried by rbi singles from
Nike Dale, Coleman Lukas, and Joe Riley.
Two walks helped Clayton Valley tie again in the sixth, but a tiring
Brian Bernard battled to contain the threat to one run.
Then Albany loaded the bases with none out. A pop up out and ground
ball throw back to the plate for the force created two outs before Ben Cerami
stepped up. First pitch, foul ball. Second pitch, ball. Third pitch, screaming
line drive down the left field liine. Game over as Kellon McGuire stepped
on home plate amid celebrating team mates. |
.
July 14th in Alameda
Albany 2, South Oakland 3
In a pitcher's battle, the edge went to Oakland hitters.
Albany trailed 1-0 when Justin Maxwell legged out an infield single,
stole second, then got company when Nick Dale worked a base of balls. Both
advanced on a wild pitch, then Tommy McCoy smoked a line drive single to
put Albany up 2-1 with two out.
But the offense evaporated and Oakland answered with two runs of its
own to eliminate Albany 3-2 (with a 3-2 record in five one-run tournament
games).
|
July 13th in Alameda
ALBANY 11, Antioch East 6
This re-match had none of the tension game-one had when Antioch had
the tieing and winning runs on base with none out in the last of the sixth.
This time, Albany scored 11of its 41 tournament runs with 13 hits.
Lead off batter Lucas Caldwell hit two more doubles. Coleman Lukas, Shoma
Murakawa, Justine Maxwell, and Nick Dale each had two hits. Miles McCreary
had a sixth inning double and three rbis.

to reach the District 4 tournament finals. (The first team played in
1996.)
 |
Arguably, this was the best team in the 2002 tournament.
It beat every team it played and it played all the best teams. Of 33 games
played, Albany won seven and their opponents won another 21, so only five
games were played that were not won by Albany or by a team Albany beat.

Albany 5 Pinole 2 -- Albany jumped ahead, 1-0, in the 1st inning
with two out when Edward Izumizaki walked and Louie Worth singled him home
... Edward's infield single and a throwing error scored Mathew Ball in the
3rd and Louie drove in Edward again with another single.
In the 4th, Pinole rallied with a lead off home run followed by a single
and a base on balls. With none out, a single scored Pinole's second run,
but Foster Goree threw from right field to Stephen Pressnall, who relayed
a dart to the plate where Brian Beckley tagged out the runner. Brian
then fired to third base where Spencer Ingels tagged out the hitter for the
double play.
Foster scored an insurance run for Albany in the 6th by hustling home
on a wild pitch. Michael Clement, pinch hittting for Spencer, singled home
Doug Fisch to complete Albany scoring.
Matthew pitched five innings. He struck out nine, walked one, and gave
up four hits. Michael relieved Matt in the sixth and struck out the side.

by Stephen DeGange
The District 4 All-Star Tournament was a bit unusual this year. Albany's
Major League (11- & 12 -year-olds) finished with a record of 3-2, but
four of the five games were cut short by the 10-run slaughter rule.
Albany opened at home with a too-easy 10-0 victory over Piedmont. Lead-off
hitter Matt Ball set the stage by hitting the first pitch he saw sharply
into left field for a single. By game's end, Ball, Doug Fisch, Noam Kopmar
and Carter Armstrong each had two hits. Cole Stipovich dominated the opposition
by pitching 4 innings of no-run, no-hit baseball while striking out 11. The
game ended in the bottom of the 4th when Albany went up 10-0.
Game #2 in the Winner's bracket took place in Pittsburgh and Albany
again "slaughtered" the opposition - East County - by the score of 13-3.
In the bottom of the lst inning, Matt Ball lead off with a walk and J.P.
Koehn homered over the left-center-field fence. In the 2nd inning, Ball hit
a homer of his own over the same fence. While Albany pitcher Andre Sternberg
limited East County to 4 hits and I earned run, Alex Sinclair supplied some
additional offensive muscle with a bases loaded double in the 4th inning.
The game ended in the 5th when Albany established a 10-run margin.
In the first two games, Albany scored a least one run in every inning.
Albany's romp through the Winner's bracket ended in Game #3 in Antioch.
In spite of another stellar pitching performance by Cole Stipovich, Albany
was trimmed 4 - 1 by the home team, Antioch East. Sternberg had two hits
and scored the only run for Albany.
Game #4 saw Albany rebound with yet another convincing performance,
this time an 11-0 victory over defending District 4 champion, Alameda, at
their home field. Sternberg threw a one-hit shutout and struck the pivotal
blow: a three-run home run in the lst inning. Batting in the 8th and 9th
spots in the order, Doug Fisch and catcher Powell DeGange went a combined
4 for 4 and drove in five runs. Carter Armstrong contributed three more hits
to the game which ended after Alameda failed to score in the top of the 4th.
Perhaps if a team lives by the slaughter rule, it is fated to die by it as
well. In Game #5, Albany ran into a red-hot Antioch West team and
succumbed, 10-0. Only Sternberg could manage a couple of hits against Antioch
starter, Mike Evers. Again, the game ended in the bottom of the 4th.
All in all, it was another exciting run for the roses by the Albany Major
League All-Stars. Last year, the team made it to the championship game of
the District 4 tournament before losing to Alameda ... a team that went on
to win the Northern California championship and come within two games of
a trip to Williamsport, PA. and the Little League World Series.
Next year's squad has a strong nucleus to build on as this year's team featured
six 11- year-olds, including starting shortstop Doug Fisch and second baseman
Matt Ball.
Addendum: The two teams that beat Albany, Antioch East and Antioch
West, eventually played each other for the District 4 championship. East
beat West and advanced to the Section One Tournament in Benicia. It lost
its first two games and was eliminated. Vacaville won the Section One
Championship and moved on to the Northern California championship where it
also was eliminated in two straight games. The Northern California championship
was captured by Sunnyvalle who, as we went to press, had won its first 4
games in the Western U.S. Regional Tournament (held every year in San Bernadino).
One more victory and Sunnyvalle would be on its way to Williamsport, PA.
and the Little League World Series, where, as they say, "dreams come true."

Quincy Moore, Jeremy Lebeau.
Front: Andrew Marshall, Andre Sternberg, Albert Kao, David Collister, James
Assia, Jason Moore, Tom Carman, Chris Alfert. (Absent: Jonah Schrogin,
Sam Shonkoff)
Tournament Synopsis
We beat Pittsburg National 8 – 1 to begin. Albert Kao pitched
4 innings of no-run, no-hit, no walks, 5 Ks baseball. It would have been
four perfect innings save for an error by first baseman Jason Moore (our
future 3-year starting shortstop at Berkeley High)!
We then lost to Concord American 8 – 5. (David Collister and Moore
each gave up 4 runs.) Then the victory parade through the losers’ bracket
began
We beat Rio Vista 5 – 0. Kao closed the game by pitching the sixth
inning and striking out all three batters. Next it was an 11 – 6 win
over Antioch West. Then a 1 – 0 win over Walnut Creek in which Albert
Kao gave up 2 hits while striking out 11. The lone Albany run scored when
11-year-old Andre Sternberg tripled in James Assia. Next, a 4 –1 win
over North Oakland. Then we clinched the Losers’ bracket with 5 –
0 win over Lafayette. Albert Kao pitched 4 more innings of shutout baseball,
giving up 2 hits and striking out 6. James Assia hit a home run and drove
in three runs and Andre Sternberg hit the first home run of his Little League
career.
Alas, then the final blow was struck by Alameda, 18 – 8, in a
game started on the mound by James Assia. He gave up 4 runs in the top of
the first which we matched in the bottom of the second. We brought in Stipovich
to pitch the top of the 3rd and he gave up four straight singles and was
replaced by Jason Moore. Jason got out of the third (3 of Cole’s runners
scored) and then Jason gave up 3 of his own in the top of the fourth. Andre
came in to pitch the top of the 5th and gave up 6 runs before he was lifted
for Collister. We scored 4 in the bottom of the 5th and that’s how it
ended. Stipovich, although he only pitched one-third of an inning, got the
loss.
The clean-up hitter for Alameda that day was 1b Corey Dunlap (4-for-4 with
3 RBIs) who went on to a good career at Ensinal High School (and then Contra
Costa College) and was drafted in June 2004 by the Los Angeles Dodgers in
the 3rd round and paid $450,000 to sign.
After they beat us for the District 4 pennant, Alameda went on to win Section
1, then win Northern California , then play into the championship game
of the Western Regional at San Bernadino, where it was eliminated.
