Schedule & Reports
July 9th (Bye)
July 10th (forfeit win)
July 12th in (Memorial Park)
East County 6, ALBANY 19
The win advanced Albany into the title game in the winners bracket.
Catcher Jason Haller hit a three-run
homer in the first inning and followed that with two singles and a double.
For the night, Haller was 4-for-4 with 7 RBIs. He also scored 4 runs. Center
fielder Jonathan Smith also homered for
Albany and went 3-for-4, with 3 runs scored and 3 RBIs.
Oliver Monday smashed two doubles and
drove in 4 runs. All told, Albany pounded out 20 hits.
Alec Carlin was the starting and winning
pitcher. Powell DeGange pitched the final
two innings and struck out five.
July 14 in Walnut Creek
North Oakland 12, Albany 8
Albany fell behind, 7-1, after two innings, and several comeback rallies
fell short. Oliver Monday hit a second
inning home run for Albany, while Alec
Carlin contributed two singles and three rbis. Lead-off hitter
Nick Garcia had three hits and scored
three runs.
July 17 in Walnut Creek
Pittsburg 3, ALBANY 6 [Loser bracket final]
Alec Carlin pitched a clutch, complete
game, 5-hitter. Max Shapiro, Jonathan
Smith, and Jacob Fong each
had two hits and an rbi.
Albany and North Oakland are the only teams remaining in the tournament.
Oakland is undefeated, Albany has one loss. To win the tournament, Albany
must beat North Oakland twice.
July 18 in Walnut Creek
North Oakland 13, Albany 11 [Championship Game]
North Oakland scored 5 runs in the top of the first and went on to take a
7-2 lead going into the bottom of the 4th inning. Albany roared back
with two-out, 9-run rally to take an 11-7 lead. Key hits in the uprising
included Dan Thompson's two-run double,
Jonathan Smith's two-run triple, and
Jason Haller's second hit of the inning,
a run-scoring double.
Alas. Albany could not hold the lead and going into the 7th inning, the game
was knotted at 11. North Oakland scored two runs in the top half of
the inning to take a 13-11 lead. Haller lead off the bottom of the
inning with a single. After a strike out, Max
Shapiro singled, and while another strike out was being recorded,
a double steal put Albany runners at second and third, with two outs.
The stage was set. Dan Thompson nailed an 0-1 fastball on the ground
between first and second. The North Oakland second baseman was able
to corral the shot and fire to first to clinch the pennant for North
Oakland. As they say, five feet either way, and it's a tie ball game.
For the game, Haller contributed 3 hits and scored 3 runs. Smith drove
in 3 while Nick Garcia, Ian Stewart,
and Shapiro each had 2 hits.
The Albany team represented its hometown proudly. Drawing on a limited
roster of players, Albany posted the best record in league play at 16-2.
And came very close to upsetting a North Oakland All-star team drawn from
its own six-team league and capturing the District 4 Championship.
